Roba Yattani Jarso

Nationality: Kenyan
Age: 22
Major: Community Development
Student number: 01-0788

I am the first born to Ruba and Orge Yattani. My father passed away in 1985 when I was only 4 year old. I have two brothers and three sisters, and the eldest is married. One of my younger brothers is in primary school and so far, we are the only ones who have managed to get an education. This is because after the death of my father, I was blessed to have the assistance from my uncle who fully undertook to pay my fees in primary and high school. He currently supports my younger brother through school.

The Gabra community from which I come is pastrolist and they depend entirely on the livestock for their livelihood. The persistent drought in the area often keeps the number of the livestock small, and in the previous one, the few that were left all perished. This left my family very needy and now they depend on government famine relief for their livelihood.

I attended a Christian primary school and attended Sunday school often but I understood whom Jesus was through various pastoral programs offered at the school. In high school, I was active in the Christian union and served in several youth activities. In the local church at home, I also participated in the youth meetings. My family members are traditionalists and I am the only Christian amongst them to learn more about Jesus and his saving grace.

I hope to go back home upon completion of my degree program and use my knowledge to improve the community life in terms of availability of water, better health and how to breed better yielding livestock.
