Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya sent its African gospel style musical group, Afrizo to sing in concerts across the U.S. fall 2009. Afrizo sings music from South, Central, and East Africa, drawing on rich African traditions. The group raised around $200,000 for scholarships to send promising young people to college who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend.
On their second U.S. tour, Afrizo visited Minnesota, Oregon, Illinois, Washington D.C., South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
Afrizo is led by Hellen Mtawali, who teaches at Daystar. writes and choreographs Afrizo’s songs and dances. The group is made up of Daystar students, and eight of them will be touring the US with Hellen this fall. Afrizo’s music combines English, Swahili, and other African languages, dance, and story-telling about how Daystar is equipping servant leaders for Africa.
