Daystar University

1999 Graduation

On May 22nd, 1999 some 7,000 people gathered at Daytar's Athi River Campus to witness, celebrate and congratulate the 401 students who represented Daystar's 21st graduating class.

Added to the 401 are more than 100 who completed the one year preuniversity program and over 600 church workers who took ministry courses at Daystar during the 1998/99 academic year.

Who are these graduates? They are men and women from 26 African countries:

  • James Karanja, a pastor in central Kenya who has been very active in resotring peace in an area that has been rocked by tribal clashes
  • Hannington Mutebi, who returns to his church in Uganda and addresses the serious poverty issue there by introducing income generating porjects integrated with the gospel
  • Rueben Sitati, who left his 16 year practice as a chemist to become a church leader

The list is endless as graduates return home as Christian business leaders, community development specialists, teachers, radio producers and agents of change across the continent.

Reverend Mutava Musyimi (seen on left), General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Kenya and graduation keynote speaker, noting the difference graduates are already making, hailed Daystar as "An institution whose vision and leadership is held in very high esteem, indeed."

As Rev. Musyimi spoke of Daystar being a bright hope for Africa, he challenged the graduates to lead Africa out of its manifold problems and resounding dissonance. He noted that, "Daystar's graduates are well equipped to sound hope across Africa and abroad", and committed the churches in Africa "To accompany Daystar in her vision."
