Can you imagine a life where simply stepping foot outside your front door puts you in danger of assault?

For thousands of women and girls living in the slums, this reality is part of daily life. More than half the residents of Nairobi live in slums settlements. In many of these slums, local law enforcement has little to no presence, leaving the vulnerable residents at the mercy of others.

Women in the slums on average have less access to healthcare, employment, and secure housing leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. Most women in the slums are faced with the duty of managing everything for themselves. This requirement means that they must face more exposure on a daily basis leaving them an easy target for assault.

Cana Cares is a mission born into the Makuru slums of Nairobi. The mission was founded in the late 90's by Daystar Graduate, Pastor Mary Mambo, along with her late husband, Pastor Joseph. The mission has served to rescue hundreds of women and children from life in the slums, human trafficking, and exploitation.

Priscah, a current Daystar student, grew up in the Makuru slums before coming to live at Cana Cares when she was just six years old. She explained that one of the only ways to survive in the slums as a woman is from the aid of a man.

Many women will seek out male partnerships as simply a way to secure food. However, it is very common for a man to leave after a child is born. When this happens women must seek out another partnership as means for survival, and the cycle continues.

Assault is also a major concern for women. Priscah explained that life in the slums changes after dark. Without law enforcement to hinder nefarious intentions, the dimly lit streets serve to provide the perfect setting for an attack.

Rescue centers like Cana Cares serve to provide a safe refuge for many of these women and young girls, just like Priscah. Your scholarship support allows these girls to leave the slums and live healthy lives once they reach adulthood.
