Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.

You know the old adage: "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime".

What if the man you teach to fish is being taught in Minnesota?  What if it happens to be winter in Minnesota (basically half of the year), and you would need to teach him how to ice fish? You would need to show him how to bundle up, so he won’t freeze.  You would bring an auger and show him to cut a hole in the ice. You even go over some of the finer points, how to bait a hook, and what kind of fish to look for like walleye or crappie. Perhaps you even give him a fish house to block the wind (and maybe include a heater) so he could stay out for a longer period of time. All of this information (which is helpful in Minnesota) would be useless, if the man you were teaching lived in Africa, and needed to feed his family there.

If you take the man out of his own cultural context, give him equipment, and even teach all the finer points, he still won’t be helped. He needs the kind of education, equipment, and access he would have at home to make this a worthwhile investment.

This is why investing in Daystar is a sound investment. Daystar University isn't taking Africans out of their culture to train them at an American university, they are educating the students in their own cultural context. In fact, Daystar University has been completely African-led for over 45 years. The staff and faculty are high-quality professionals who care about the students they serve. And the students are staying in their own context to serve the next generation of leaders.

Your valuable contribution to the mission of Daystar, through Daystar U.S., helps to continue producing servant leaders to transform Africa. Thank you!

Blessings,

Alan

P.S.  Here is a photo of some members of the Afrizo singing group, experiencing Minnesota winter.  Our friends Elmer and Barb gave them quite an introduction to the joys of winter! That was a new and different experience for them all.
