DAVID DUT
HEAD OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT, SOUTH SUDAN RED CROSS
David graduated from Daystar University in 2011 with a degree in community development. Prior to enrolling at Daystar, David's life was very difficult. He was forced to flee his home village due to civil war in Sudan and he and family lived in an Ethiopian refugee camp for several years before fleeing war that made its way to Ethiopia as well. It was in Ethiopia that he started getting an education and came to love Jesus as his savior and hope in the midst of hopelessness. He moved to Uganda and Sudan and worked as a secretary in a local church while finishing his high school education.
David enrolled in Daystar University with a strong desire to learn skills that would help rebuild his devastated nation. Since graduating he has worked at the South Sudan Red Cross under various positions in emergency preparedness and disaster relief. He is now the Head of Disaster Management, and he attributes this to his education at Daystar: “My promotions were based on performance, consequently the result of the knowledge I got from Daystar University. I am not boasting of what position I have but I am counting what God is doing for me, and that was because of my honored donors who had supported my future.”
He expresses his thankfulness for Daystar U.S. and the donors who helped get him to where he is today. David is helping to rebuild Sudan and the people affected by civil war. To his donors he says, “I would like to assure you that the money you invested in my education did not go in vain! I hope you feel proud of what you have done to education me and help the people of South Sudan. Without you, I would have been nothing at all, even for my family.”
MARY MAMBO
FOUNDER, CANA CHILDREN’S CENTER
Mary Mambo graduated from Daystar University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in counseling and psychology. Shortly after graduating she founded Cana Children’s Center, a humanitarian center located in a vast Nairobi slum. This is the only center of its kind in a slum of more than 250,000 people. The center addresses a variety of community issues including tuberculosis, preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission, and reducing infant and maternal death. Each month, approximately 170 healthy babies are born in Mary’s clinic.
The center also rescues young girls who have been sexually abused, giving them a safe place to live and go to school. Approximately 300 children and youth attend school at Cana Children’s Center. Every day Mary provides a meal for all of them. She said, “Our work is a holistic ministry; we help people spiritually, physically, and emotionally. We take the whole person and help the whole person."
NOELLA KASONGO
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, GLEAWEI
Noella Kasongo studied social work and business administration at Daystar University. Coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Noella has known the hardships of conflict and war. She came to Daystar knowing her purpose was to make a difference in the lives of women who suffered violence and trauma in the wake of political and ethnic turmoil.
Graduating in 2014, Noella immediately put her degree to work, starting the Great Lakes and East Africa Women Empowerment Initiative (GLEAWEI). This programs goal is to empower women by helping them identify and grow their skills to gain valuable skills and self-esteem. She serves as the Executive Director of GLEAWEI and encourages discussions in her community on peace and conflict reconciliation.
